We celebrated the Jewish New Year in Montreal this year, as in the past. I was tasked with making a honey cake, and decided to try this one from Deb Perelman.

Known for her popular blog Smitten Kitchen, Perelman’s recipe is chock full of flavourful ingredients: orange juice, whiskey, coffee, warm spices. I made this in my sister-in-law’s kitchen, and I don’t think there was allspice or cloves so we skipped that.

Majestic and Moist Honey Cake

This turned out nicely, but honestly, I didn’t sample very much of it. I am intrigued that the author says it tastes phenomenal a few days later. One of the cake rounds was wrapped up and frozen for later, so no leftovers for me. I did make a mental note that I would repeat this at some point, as it seems like a delicious, non-traditional take on a classic Rosh Hashanah cake.
